Truth 1.31.20

When the truth no longer matters to society, we deem ourselves ungovernable and impaired to bend and sway as money and power reck havoc upon all our individual rights.  If this is our choice, at a cost too high to consider alternative, we seal the fate of our “democracy”, and may promptly announce to the world the end of this great experiment that our forefather sought to endeavor upon.  We may look into the eyes of our sons and daughters and declare that it “just wasn’t worth it”, and their futures were subject to an inconvenience of political errand.  We may well say this with heavy hearts, or sigh indiscriminately, but nonetheless we considered ourselves over them.  Some may disagree, as often happens, but it does nothing to change the truth of the matter.  But oh wait, my mistake, that no longer bears any weight because truth is now simply in the eyes of the beholder.  And if that person’s gaze wanders, then it is of no consequence, because we are not to be held accountable for something we collectively choose to agree no longer agree exists.

John 17: 16-19

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.  As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.  I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

But. God’s word is truth.  Jesus came in truth and love (Jn 1:17, Eph 4:15).  SO, are we as Christians, followers of the same person whose exact existence is described as the incarnate of the Creator and Sustainer of the universe in which we are all a part of and mortal to, deny the relevance of this fact?  All choices have consequence.  All choices have consequence.  Sometimes we see consequence in this life, and other times we will only see accountability in thereafter.  But make no mistake, choose to believe or not, truth is truth and it is a whole and enveloping characteristic of God.  If we are honest in our belief that we are made in His image, then it MUST be a characteristic that we strive to be impacted by.

As we declare God is sovereign (1 Chr. 29:11), we cannot also whisper that we need any one individual to see out His plan.  Especially not when it is at the dispense of truth; the integrity of our savior is indisputable and stipulates truth as an eternal, unchangeable requisite.  The politics don’t matter, the persons involved don’t matter, and the mortal consequences shouldn’t matter either.  But when you select to ignore or hide truth, you are selecting the mortal opinion of the matter over the eternal consequence of what is indisputable.  Like it or not, like the person or not, truth is unchangeable.  Once in existence, it does not cock to one side, or shrink down under threat of peril.  Truth: it stands tall, walks fiercely, and strikes fear into those who deny its existence.  Now, what do we do with that?  What WILL you do with that?

If our lives are like grass in the field (Ps 103:15-16), alive and flourishing, only to quickly wither in death, then how much more so is a phone call in time like a tiny wisp of wind bending the grass for a mere second?  We exist not in a court of law, but a Court of our Lord (Ps 103:19).  Why do we commend ourselves to act differently?  Truth deserves better.  Our Creator demands better.

During this intensely polarized political time, who are we really pledging our allegiance too?  Our Lord and Savior of all who put their faith in Him, or a systemic approach to proving our own agendas without reproach?  We are not doing the “work of our Lord” when we scriptly forget to whom we must give account.  The Sovereign God, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, whose character is truth and love.  There is as much incompatibility in denying any one of those aspects as there is in denying all of them.  No part and parcel here – either we are in, or we are out.  Behaviors should follow accordingly.
